Powering the ‘Green Industrial Revolution’ with VCIS

By 2030, the sale of new diesel and petrol cars will be banned in the United Kingdom. A huge factor in the ability to achieve this is the increased use of electric vehicles.

This comes as part of the government’s pledge to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

The RAC estimates that there are around 712,000 Battery Electric Vehicles in the UK currently. This compared to less than 10,000 in 2015.

In November 2020, as part of the Government’s plan for a “green industrial revolution”, the then Prime Minister announced that the sale of new petrol and diesel cars would be phased out by 2030 and that all new cars and vans would be zero emission by 2035.

What classifies as an electric vehicle (EV)?

EVs run, either partially or wholly, on electricity stored on board the vehicle in batteries or produced from hydrogen. Some types of electric vehicle qualify as zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) or ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs).

The EV market is growing, data from 2022 shows that 14% of new car registrations in the UK were battery electric vehicles. However, most cars on the road are still petrol or diesel powered.

The number of new electric vehicles on the road is set to continue growing. With policies and investments taken by the Government to support the transition to zero emission cars and vans.

Government initiatives to support the EV agenda

To help achieve its 2030 target as part of its Net Zero Strategy, the Government confirmed its plan to introduce a ZEV mandate from 2024. The mandate will set annual targets for the percentage of manufacturers’ new car and van sales that need to be zero emission from 2024 onwards.
